Remote Online Observation of Thinking in Seniors
-
The Remote Online Observation of Thinking in Seniors (ROOTS) study is researching whether short memory and thinking tests, completed on your personal device, can detect and track early memory changes related to aging and/or Alzheimer's Disease (AD).
AD begins changing the brain years before anyone notices symptoms. The aim of this study is to see how well these memory and thinking tests can detect and track early stages of AD over time, as well as to measure age-related memory changes.
-
An estimated 5.7 million Americans suffer from AD and this number is projected to double by the year 2050. AD is a burdensome disease, afflicting patients, caregivers, and society-at-large.
Potential treatments rely on detecting AD as early as possible - making it necessary to improve the accuracy and reliability of detection tools. We hope that the tests being studied in the ROOTS study can be used to detect AD-related memory changes in its early stages and predict future memory changes.
Additionally, the ROOTS study utilizes remote testing, tests that you can complete on your personal device on your own time. We hope the ease of completing testing from home will allow us to reach a larger audience and engage with those who may not normally have the opportunity to participate in clinical research, so that what we learn can apply to as many people as possible.
-
We are seeking adults aged 62+ to test whether activities completed on your personal device can detect early age and/or Alzheimer's-related memory changes. Those individuals with reliable access to a personal device with internet, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer, and those comfortable reading and speaking in English, are invited to participate.
-
Individuals diagnosed with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and individuals who have previously completed the Boston Remote Assessment for Neurocognitive Health (BRANCH) cannot take part in the ROOTS Study at this time.
-
You will be asked to complete 1 in-person session at the Charlestown Navy Yard or Longwood Medical Area. This session should take around 90 minutes and will include a blood draw, memory testing, and lifestyle questionnaires. We will provide feedback about your performance in this session. Travel can be provided or reimbursed.
The following 6 sessions will involve memory testing, either on your personal device or over video call with a member of our team. We will provide feedback about your performance on these experimental tests over time.
We will also encourage you to provide a study partner - someone who sees you frequently enough to be able to answer questions about your memory and everyday functioning - to complete a short questionnaire.
Your estimated time commitment will be 7 sessions completed over 2 years.
